‘Instead
of drinking coke why not drink beer?’ the police officer asked opening his
bottle of beer with the opener.
‘I can’t handle
it,’ Chisom replied, taking the opener to open the cokes.
The
police officer poured some beer into the glass cup on his table. He enjoyed the
foam which formed in the drink. Beneath the froth it was chill, bitter, extremely
good, and the officer closed his eyes, savouring the beer, enjoying the taste.
‘It
tastes like you, Miss,’ the officer said opening his eyes but was disappointed
when he didn’t see Chisom. She had already left with the opened bottles of
coke.
Hearing what the officer
said, they men laughed. Sitting at the
counter, Chioma turned to the food before them, broke the pineapple bun, and
took a big bite.
Then
a couple of beautiful girls in gorgeous dresses walked in. They had a newspaper
and were talking over one of the cases in it. ‘It will be stupidity for my idol Michael to leave his girlfriend for
a cheap slut?’ Chisom heard one of them say;
‘The girl is still mysterious.’
‘I
will rip the girl off when I see her.’
‘What
if the girl is as beautiful as Jessica?’
‘Then
we will let it pass.’
Chisom
glanced at Chioma and noticed her spaced
out. She suspected that Chioma was thinking about the girls’
conversation, she couldn’t help but feel sorry for her friend.
‘Hope
you are not thinking that you are the mysterious girlfriend of Michael
Njemanze?’
Chioma
was startled for a second and did not reply to Chisom. Changing the topic,
Chioma asked instead, ‘What did that police officer say to you? He is
irritating, right?’
