The Moment I Met You (Chapter 409)

By Nightengale Ben-Onyeukwu

Rebecca had returned back to Imo State, but upon arriving at the government house, she was greeted with the humiliating news about her past. After seeing the article, her face turned terrifying red. She grabbed onto the entertainment magazine and stomped over on her high heeled shoes to Emmanuel’s office and threw it in front of him. ‘Honey, why didn’t you take down this news?’

Emmanuel put down the documents in his hands and stood up from his chair, which was made of genuine leather. It was very soft and comfortable, and then he said after a moment, ‘Because it’s the truth and what would they do about it? No one would stop the fact that we’re married and happy.’

‘I know but don’t you see that our daughter is caught in the middle of it? She wouldn’t be respected anymore because I came from a lowly home…’

‘That was years ago, Rebecca. Besides, your parents were civil servants while that slummy girl’s mother is nothing but a fruit vendor. Your parents did farm work for hobby, while Chioma’s mother sold fruits for a living. So you see, you’re never as poor as Chioma. You were a lowly reporter, but she is nothing but a waitress who only survives with tips…’

‘I survived with brown envelopes…how is that different from Chioma’s lowly life?’

‘In those days when I met you, reporters were regarded in high esteem…whether a poor or rich reporter. Everyone respected them…and even now. But that girl is nothing but a poor waitress…so she has no right to walk the same path with you.’

‘That girl is a careful schemer. We need to destroy her as soon as possible…’

Emmanuel nodded and said, ‘Chioma is currently in Lagos. I know how to destroy her. She’ll surely regret playing a love rival movie with my daughter.’

‘What about the news? If you don’t do any PR and let the scandal continue to spread, all that would be awaiting me would be the netizens disgust and destruction. I can’t believe that Emeka would destroy my reputation just to protect and defend that slummy girl. He forgets that we’re from the same village…’

‘No worries, I am here to fight this battle for you and our daughter. I will take down the news, and then pull Chioma down that she wouldn’t be able to recover. If she tries to retaliate, I will pull her down again and again.’

Rebecca revealed a slight smile, knowing that her husband was capable of saving any situation. He would be able to take down the news but would he be able to force Michael to marry Jessica? His power was indeed limited.

After Jessica met with the Lagos State governor, she drove straight to Sharon’s. Walking inside the magnificent mansion belonging to the Ojukwu’s, Jessica saw Sharon alone in the living room eating dinner.

Even though the table was filled with delicacies, she did not seem to be happy as she doesn’t often like to eat alone. Nathan was taking a refreshing stroll with Erica that had visited. So, when she saw Jessica, Sharon smiled.

‘Come and eat with me.’ Sharon issued an invitation.

‘Where is Nathan?’ Jessica asked as she sat next to Sharon. She put the Hermes handbag on the empty seat.

‘He went to meet a few of his friends. He should be back any moment. Maybe he could be receiving fresh air instead of coming in at once to eat dinner. Eat some food.’ Sharon handed her a fork and said.

‘Chioma has dragged me to the news again. She also dragged my mother’s past in it.’ Jessica wasn’t in the mood to eat. She was angry about losing Michael.

‘Eat and stop disturbing yourself about that girl. What will be, will be…not even you can stop it.’

‘I don’t believe in those silly words. I believe that I should fight for what is rightfully mine.’ Jessica began to eat. ‘I will have to contact the media sources soon. They need to know that Chioma has never been interested in Michael. She is only interested in his money. My mother was interested in my father and not in his money. My mother loved my father but Chioma loves Michael’s money while I love him so much.’

‘When will you stop creating problems for yourself? Michael will never let you go scot-free. I am sure that he hasn’t pushed you to the street yet because he wants to see if you would change. But no, everyday your hate for Chioma increases.’

Jessica pointed at the pasta with her fork. ‘Do you know what Michael’s favourite food is?’

‘Yeah, the whole world knows that he likes pasta, especially with fish,’ Sharon smiled. ‘I heard that Chioma likes pasta too.’

Jessica tilted her head and looked at Sharon with grim expression. ‘I hate that girl, and don’t make me throw up because of her.’

‘Try and throw another attack at Chioma and see how Michael will make your life a living hell.’

Jessica looked at Sharon with an icy cold glare and said, ‘everyone already knows that Michael and I were to get married, don’t blame me if my fans bully her…’

‘Even if you are not thinking right now, you should at least think about your parents. Spending your life trying to step on Chioma will definitely lead you to a bad ending.’

After hearing this, Jessica stood up all of a sudden and stared furiously at Sharon. ‘You are my best friend, yet you are against my happiness.’ She picked up her bag and exited the door.

She walked out with tears stealing into her eyes. The thought of losing Michael was something that she couldn’t bear. She didn’t want to enter the car yet, and as she strolled in the compound, she saw that under the shade of a tree, stood a petite figure. There was also a tall and slender figure with the petite woman. Jessica felt that the man was Nathan. She immediately grew anxious, wondering what he was doing with the woman. She hurried over, but paused when she saw clearly that the woman was hugging Nathan’s neck. The two were very close, looking like they were kissing.

At this moment, Jessica felt that the blood in her heart was flowing in reverse, and her hands and feet were cold. She took two steps forward, wanting to drag Nathan from the woman. But then, how could she do that? She has told Nathan severally that she never had feelings for him; rather she was only crazily in love with Michael. But why was she feeling this way when she saw him with another woman.

Still looking at them, she saw Nathan holding the woman’s shoulders, and his alluring lips turned into a warm-gentle smile.

‘Erica, I just love Jessica so much…but I don’t know why she has turned into a ruthless person,’ Nathan whispered for her ears alone.

‘If I need to pretend to be your girlfriend just to make Jessica jealous, then I will do it my handsome cousin. I know how much you love Jessica. I am sure that one day, she would realise how good you are.’

Not wanting to take another glance or rather afraid that she would see a scene that would cause her pain, she turned around as tears flowed down her cheeks. She was in love with Michael, why being jealous of Nathan he had rejected so many times.
