The moment I met you (Chapter 60)

 By Nightengale Ben-Onyeukwu

When Jessica left, Edward said to Michael, ‘Michael, I’ve known the Nnajis for a long time. Emmanuel and I grew up together. We have been friends, whom you know too well…’

‘Father, hope you ain’t starting a family history? I know how much you and Emmanuel like each other. You’re not just friends, but close friends. I’m not interested in your history class. Save it for another day.’ Michael looked down to sip at his tea.

‘Marriage is business. You have to marry Jessica. When the both family become one big family, we will dominate the entire country and flourish far at least another century.’

‘That’s what you want, right? What does your son think about it?’

‘We are on the same page here.’

‘Oh, dad, but I’m not with you on this.’ He rose to his feet, and Edward glanced up at him. ‘I won’t marry Jessica. Besides, our family has always been number one in this country.’ He turned his head away. ‘We own this country! With our cash, we decide who becomes the president of Nigeria.’ He turned towards Edward and added, ‘we have plots in the five most expensive places here in Abuja; we have plots and properties in the luxurious districts of Asokoro, Maitama, Wuse, Garki and Gwarimpa… we also own properties in other cities in Nigeria. We acquired that with our hard work.’ He shook his head lightly. ‘We don’t need Emmanuel. He is only useful in Imo State, not here in Abuja. We are allotted lands by the president which we still pay billions to get.  Our only advantage is that out of the hundreds of competitors, we are sure to get it. So you see, we will always remain on top. We owe no one. We pay for everything that we receive.’
