Done with eating, Chioma walked towards her bag, took out a brown envelope from her bag and handed it to her mother. ‘That’s my salary for the month. It’s 30,000 naira… I hope you don’t refuse it,’Chioma said softly.
‘Chioma, I don’t think I will need it…’
‘Mum…please,’Chioma whispered, looking tenderly at her mother.
‘Since mother doesn’t want it, maybe you should give it to me. I need to buy branded western clothing for my candle lit dinner date with Chisom,’Andrew joked.
‘Chisom received hers too, maybe you could collect her own salary and buy the clothes…’Louisa turned to Andrew and said.
Andrew laughed in the manner that looked uglier than crying, and said, ‘Chisom will see me as handicapped man if I do that…’
Chioma laughed. Then, she looked at her mother and said, ‘Just take the money, okay?’
‘Okay…we still need some food stuffs. This your salary will do.’ Louisa didn’t refuse the money and she wouldn’t use it on herself knowing that some things needed to be bought for the home upkeep.
Chioma didn’t know whether to cry or laugh. But then, she knew that most mothers are like that; their family was always their priority. Chioma smiled and didn’t say another word. Next time she would have to buy a present instead of giving her mother the money. She, then, began to clear the dishes.
In the bedroom, Chioma walked behind Louisa, put her hands around her neck, and slowly said, ‘Mum, I’m sorry to have kept this from you…I wish you don’t get mad… yes, I am now the girlfriend of that mysterious man. I know that I am of lowly birth, and don’t deserve him…but I do love him…’
