The moment I met you (Chapter 52)

 By Nightengale Ben-Onyeukwu

‘Thank you for your time… pay 2000 to your boss and keep the change for yourself.’ Before Chioma could refuse the money or ask any question, the girl was gone.

Chioma was shocked. Audrey was supposed to pay 2000 naira for the meal, but had given 10,000 naira. Chioma wondered why this girl whom she had never met before tipped her 8000 naira for her own spending. Audrey was in her late teens or perhaps early 20s.  The girl must be from a rich family. No poor person will throw away money like this! Chioma thought. It was just a simple dish of fried rice, nothing special. Some people are generous.

Not having the courage to take the money, she decided to tell her boss about it. She brought the 10,000 to Emeka who was talking to a customer. Chioma waited patiently for the boss to finish speaking with the customer before talking to him about the generous tip.

Chioma gave him the money but Emeka refused to take it.

‘This is my first time of seeing a customer doing a huge give away,’ Emeka chuckled. ‘But you have to take it because the customer gave it to you. It’s yours. Don’t be afraid to spend it.’

Chioma nodded with a sweet smile, and turned around to meet the chubby customer who was asking her to come and take his order.

‘Oh, okay,’ the girl only said expressionlessly.

‘Here’s the apple.’ Chioma handed her the apple.

‘Audrey is my name,’ the girl said, taking the apple. She had a small bite, and then waved Chioma to go and attend to other customers while she waited for the fried rice she had ordered.

Chioma picked up a tissue to wipe the knife before leaving the girl alone. The girl commanded an aura of a rich princess; Chioma could see that very clearly. She wondered who Audrey was and why she decided to eat in such a local restaurant instead of a high-end restaurant.

Fifteen or sixteen minutes later, Chioma brought a plate of steaming fried rice and a can of iced cola. She carefully placed the delicious food before the girl and turned to leave.

‘Hey, Chioma.’

Chioma turned around to look at Audrey.

Audrey gestured to Chioma to sit in the chair across from her.

With a forced smile, Chioma sat down.

Noticing Audrey’s glass of water was empty, Chioma had to pour water for her.

‘You’re thoughtful and observant,’ Audrey said with a sweet smile as she put a spoonful of the fried rice into her mouth.

Chioma wanted to tell the girl that she had other customers to attend to but she decided against it. Instead she asked, ‘Do you like the food?’

‘Of course,’ Audrey answered happily. It was obvious that she like the food.

When she finished eating the scrumptious dish, she drank the iced cola, then she elegantly drew out tissue from the tissue box to wipe her lips. Reaching for her purse, she pulled out a stack of cash and handed it to Chioma.

‘Yes ma’am.’

The girl glanced at her watch. ‘In half an hour, I should be leaving for the airport. My elder brother is arriving from the US. Better don’t waste my time else I’ll blow you up.’

‘Are you a bomb genius?’ Chioma muttered, thinking that the girl didn’t hear her. But she heard what Chioma said, and even gave Chioma a frown.

Chioma didn’t know what to say to the girl. She didn’t want any trouble, especially not on her first day at work. She had read from a book that customers are always right. It seemed she was going to tolerate the customers since it was the right thing to do. Besides, most of the customers are frequent diners that she knew.

‘Hope the fried rice will be delicious?’ the girl asked, picking up an apple from the fruit bowl.

‘Yes ma’am. My friend is on it.’

‘On it?’ the girl scoffed. ‘Is she sitting on it?’ she said in a huff, then handed the apple to Chioma. Peel it for me.’

Chioma obediently took the apple from the girl. Picking up a knife, she began to carefully peel the apple.

‘Hope the eggs are from the hens raised with natural feed? The girl glanced at Chioma and asked. ‘I want to have delicious eggs.’

‘Yes, ma’am,’ Chioma replied, trying her best to please the girl.

‘What’s your name?’

‘Chioma Chima,’ with her head lowered, Chioma peeled the apple and answered.

 ‘Do you have a boyfriend?’

‘No, ma’am.’

Chioma caught him staring at her but pretended not seeing his gaze. She didn’t want her boss   to feel embarrassed.

‘How do you feel to be part of us? I hope you are pleased?’ Chisom enthusiastically asked.

‘Yea, I’m glad to work here   now. At least I’m now a working-class lady.’ She stuck out her tongue playfully.

Chisom chuckled. ‘Now that you’re Miss moneybags, I will gladly rip you off.’

‘You don’t need to raise your hopes because I’m certain to be the number one stingy girl in the world.’

The two girls chatted happily until customers began arriving.

‘What would you like to order?’ Chioma walked over to a girl and asked cheerfully. The girl was in a green floral dress and a white beret. She seemed to be speaking to her boyfriend on the phone. Hanging up she turned to look at Chioma. ‘What would you like to order? Chioma gently repeated the question.

‘Fried rice with boiled eggs,’ the girl replied, reaching for a lipstick from her white purse. ‘Also, I’d like iced cola,’ she added, and began putting on lipstick with a small mirror.

‘I’ll be back,’ Chioma politely said, and hurried off. She came back with some apples and a glass of fresh juice. ‘Ma’am why you wait for the fried rice I’ll like you to eat some apple with a glass of fresh juice,’ Chioma spoke gently as she placed the bowl of apples and a glass of juice on the small table.

‘Are you kidding? Do I have to wait for ages?’

‘Only a few minutes, ma’am.’

When the girl finished applying her make-up, she put the chanel lipstick into her purse.

‘Eating the apple and drinking the juice isn’t a problem, but I hope they’re fresh?’

Just as Chioma was about to reply, Emeka Ndubuisi walked in, wearing blue jeans and a black thick jacket which was obviously from a low-end brand  he bought from a street stall. The dress fitted him perfectly well.

Both Chioma and Chisom stood up to greet him. He might be an ordinary man but was the boss of Star Restaurant.

‘You haven’t still changed into your uniform?’ Emeka asked Chioma.

Chisom was already wearing her uniform and ready for work. The uniform was black dress with red scarf. The dress looked good on her. She was about 168 centimetre tall. Her dark hair was tied with red elastic band.

‘I will get her something to change into,’ Chisom said and turned away. She returned with a black dress and a red scarf, and handed the dress to Chioma. ‘Change into these, so we could begin work already.’

Emeka smiled, and then headed for the counter. Chioma blushed, and walked over to the changing room.

‘My goodness, you look beautiful!’ Chisom exclaimed when Chioma came into the dining area. ‘Everyone is going to be looking at you instead of eating.’

Although Emeka was busy at the counter, he couldn’t help sneakily peeking at Chioma. Upon seeing her in such a fitting dress and scarf, Emeka felt his heart beat faster. She was beautiful, he thought. Yes, she was no queen of beauty; Emeka still felt that her beauty was enchanting enough to ruin a country. Was that possible for a woman to ruin a country with her beauty? If it were possible, was someone like Chioma qualified to ruin the world with her beauty. She wasn’t exceptionally beautiful, but she had the uniqueness that could captivate her surroundings.  Such beauty was not easily erased in the minds of men.

‘Yes,’ Chioma nodded. ‘I treated myself without his money.’

‘Chioma?’

‘Yeah?’

‘Are you sure that you ain’t regretting losing this man for good?’ Chisom asked, with a serious expression on her face.

‘Well, at that point, I had to toss his money and card at him. I was rude to him.’ She turned her face away. ‘I hate guys that think too highly of themselves. I felt insulted with the way he treated me like I was some kind of charity case.’

‘Chioma, you know why I’m asking. You told me that on your first meeting  which was the moment you met him, you felt that he was the most important person in your life,’ she paused and spoke again. Chioma turned her face back to look at her. ‘You said that with him you want to experience all sorts of emotions… love, hate, infatuation… Now, the opportunity came for you to grab it… you threw it away.’ Her voice was small.

‘Chisom, stop it. I was only joking when I said that.’ Chioma’s voice sounded hoarse as tears stole into her eyes.

‘I’m not joking.’ Chisom was serious.

‘So you’re going to blame me now?’

‘No.’

‘What I did was wrong?’

Chisom didn’t reply, but her expression said it all.

Chioma took a deep breath in and pointed at her. ‘Fine, Chisom, what should I have done?’

‘You shouldn’t have let your anger get the best of you.’

‘I know I was in the wrong, but I couldn’t stand him trying to show off in front of me…’

‘He loves you.’ Chisom was optimistic about that. ‘He acted like a gentleman in the simple way he knows. Someone of such status couldn’t have cared whether you were dead or alive. But he waited patiently for you, despite his schedules. You’re one lucky girl.’ She patted Chioma’s shoulder and asked, ‘You love him, don’t you?’

‘Big brother, Andrew.’ Chisom wrote. ‘Chioma’s here already’.

‘Good.  She was involved in an accident with the handsome rich and popular Michael Njemanze. She might not have told you everything about the accident but then, I want you to always be with my sister. She’s your best friend.’

‘I get it big brother Andrew,’ Chisom replied, then went offline.

‘Chisom, I thought you’d be busy so didn’t bother disturbing you,’ Chioma said softly.

‘How can I not be busy? I’m super busy! Busy like bees.’ Chisom was angry. ‘How could you not have told me about the accident you had yesterday?’ She looked up at Chioma.

‘Chisom, I’m sorry. Besides, I felt you’d be busy with your customers…’

‘Even so, how could you not have told me about the accident you had yesterday? You have been my best friend since secondary school. That I’m a waitress shouldn’t change anything.’

‘Hey, miss amiable and exceptionally kindhearted girl,’ Chioma said with a smile.

‘Shut up!’ Chisom rolled her eyes. ‘You’re very stupid!’

Chioma laughed. ‘I’m sorry, bestie.’

‘I just learnt from your elder brother that it was Michael Njemanze that hit you?

Chioma nodded, and then told Chisom everything that happened.

Chisom sighed slightly. ‘So… you’re sure you did the right thing by rejecting the money to treat yourself?’ Chisom asked as she reached out to hold Chioma’s hand.

She scratched her head at the crazy thoughts popping into her head, and blushed. Her thinking seemed foolish.

Her mind raced with countless thoughts regarding Michael that she didn’t know when she drifted off to sleep.

The following day Chioma took a quick shower, had a simple but hearty breakfast before pulling on a pale of light blue overalls, paired with white sneakers and a white long sleeved shirt. Her hair was tied up in a high ponytail; she had only lip gloss on her lips. She was looking young and beautiful.

Waving her mother goodbye, and kissing Andrew on the cheek, Chioma left for Star Restaurant. Chisom was surprised to see her at the same time pleased.

‘You didn’t get the job yesterday, did you?’ Chisom was oblivious about the accident that happened to Chioma.

Chioma shook her head.

‘Hey, I thought we agreed that you’d work here with me as soon as you didn’t get the job yesterday. I can’t believe you didn’t come back here?’Chisom said as she pulled up a chair and sat next to Chioma.

‘I was going to come here yesterday, but I got into an accident.’

‘What?’ Chisom was shocked. It was obvious she wasn’t aware of Chioma’s accident. ‘Did you go to the hospital? Are you still hurting?’ she was concerned about her best friend. They were like sisters.

‘I’m fine now.’ Chioma smiled gently, trying not to make her think too much.

‘Can I see it?’Chisom looked worried.

Chioma bent down and pulled her trouser leg up a couple of inches to show her the wound. ‘It doesn’t hurt anymore. I went to the clinic near my house and had it treated.’

Chisom moved closer to inspect it. She looked up at Chioma and asked, ‘Was that why you left my Whatsapp messages unanswered? You could have told me about it…’ Her words were interrupted by a beep from her Whatsapp and she immediately picked it up. It was from Andrew.

The moment I met you (Chapter 44)

Jessica too was beautiful. She was 170 centimetre tall, with long eyelashes and well delicate face. Her dimples were adorable, and her pink evening dress adorned with white diamonds looked stunning on her. She looked like an eighteen year old girl who was going for her first debut. She was indeed blessed with all the features of a beautiful woman.

For some reason, Chioma was sad at the beautiful figure of Jessica standing next to Michael. They might not look intimate in the photo but the picture was perfect and they seem good together. Perhaps like a real couple. They were picture-perfect.

Then like a child that might lose in the fight, she clenched her fists and could even hear her heart pounding. What was wrong with her? She doesn’t even know Michael and might not even stand the chance. Perhaps, she would have to be brave enough to confess her love for him. But if she did, wouldn’t that mean embarrassing herself. If it comes to the point that she wouldn’t have the chance to meet Michael and confess her feelings towards him or perhaps, if she didn’t have the courage even if she had the chance, then she would have to keep the man in her heart secretly and love him silently without asking him to return the feelings, even though she felt that she would have the chance of meeting him again. I’m I not running crazy with my stupid thoughts? My life isn’t a movie so I shouldn’t feel that I will have a chance with this god-like man. I’m not even qualified to clean his shoes let alone being his woman. Was he a playboy? Perhaps he kept changing bed partners like most rich guys do? Even so, he was so handsome that women will keep chasing after him like idiots. Perhaps he could be gay or impotent.

The moment I met you (Chapter 43)

By Nightengale Ben-Onyeukwu

‘Star Restaurant is always open for you.’

‘I appreciate.’

‘You can begin work tomorrow.’

Chioma replied with a dancing emoji. If she couldn’t find a lucrative job, she could make-do with Star Restaurant. She would have to begin tomorrow.

Still bothered with the issue of Jessica, Chioma decided to Google about her.  And just as she had thought, Jessica turned out to be the daughter of Imo State governor, Emmanuel Nnaji. She was shocked when she read about her profile. It was said that Jessica was Michael’s fiancée. She had studied Mass Communication in one of the reputable universities in the United States of America, the University of California. Jessica had also furthered her education in the United Kingdom, at the University of Leeds.

Chioma didn’t know whether to cry or laugh at her discovery. Knowing that her chances of being with Michael were slim, tears stole into her eyes.

Then her eyes caught the smiling photo of Michael standing next to Jessica.  In the photo Michael was wearing an Italian handmade collared shirt. It was said that the designers of the dress were specialised for making clothes for royal families. The dress was adorned with blue diamonds. Chioma wondered how much the dress could have cost. Perhaps it was ten or fifteen million dollars worth of dress. She couldn’t help but think that it could have cost that much. Nothing was said about where the blue buttons on Michael’s dress was produced. Chioma felt that the blue diamond buttons could have been produced from either South Africa or Namibia. She had read about South Africa’s blue diamonds.

Chioma couldn’t help but stare at Michael’s beautiful face. She seemed wrapped with his beautiful eyelashes. Wasn’t it unfair for a man to have such beautiful eyelashes, well chiseled face? Michael was so handsome that no matter how crossed you’re with him, it was impossible to hate him. His charming smile was enough to make an angry person become happy again.

The moment I met you (Chapter 42)

By Nightengle Ben-Onyeukwu

At this same moment in the home of the Chimas, Chioma was lying in bed browsing facebook with her phone. To her surprise she saw that she was the most searched hashtag. Why would anyone write about her? Though her name wasn’t in the story, she knew that she was the one. Her picture and that of Michael were in the story. It was about the accident that happened earlier today. Michael’s name was written but the story wasn’t written in details. Paparazzos were good at sneaking photos. She read the title of the story; Michael Njemanze will never be seduced by cheap women. She clicked on it and found that both Jessica and Michael’s fans were railing at her for trying to break Jessica and Michael apart.

Chioma was too lazy to be bothered with the trash talk that flooded the screen. She didn’t do anything wrong and so have no reason to be afraid. Netizens were good with talking trash. She wasn’t even popular. She was only a poor girl, from a poor background. But her only fear and worry was about Michael. Could he be engaged? Was he really married?  Who really was this Jessica? Could she be the daughter of the governor of Imo State? If she were the daughter of Imo State, then she might not have the chance with Michael, right? She thought. She wished that her thoughts were wrong. Perhaps, Chioma was being a bit selfish with her thoughts.

A few moments later she received a Whatsapp message from Emeka Ndubuisi.‘You know who is Michael Njemanze, right?’

‘I know that he is the president of CBN,’ Chioma replied mockingly.  Chioma recently found out about Michael when she glanced through the address card Michael had given her earlier today. Though she tossed the card and money back at Michael when she felted insulted by the way he showed off his wealth, she was still quick to get his name. Then, when she returned home, she browsed about Michael Njemanze. ‘What do I care about him? He made me lose my job!’ she was a bit angry.

Chioma now knew that Michael was not only the CEO of Moon Corporation. He was an incredibly powerful individual. She had no doubts about Michael’s personality, because from the first moment that she met him, she felt that he was someone who possessed a noble status.

The moment I met you (Chapter 41)

‘Michael, you know how much I love you, right?’

Michael stopped in his tracks, not understanding why his mother suddenly said that.

With one hand on the door handle and the other in his trouser pocket, Michael turned around slowly. His every move was alluring and enchanting, no wonder he was pursued my so many women. Men were not out of the chase because most of them wanted him to become their gay partner.  Michael would never give them the chance. He was an honourable man.

Patricia looked at him and said, ‘you must marry a woman that would never bring shame upon this family. She must be someone from a good background. I wonder who will be more qualified than Jessica.’

Michael didn’t say a word. Then he pulled open the door and stepped out of the room. He understood the meaning behind her words.

Jessica’s family was the second richest in Nigeria. She was a princess in her family and was given everything that she wanted. Her father was the governor of Imo state and also the chairman of Nnaji group, which was the second highest company in Nigeria, with Moon Corporation leading the way.

Michael wouldn’t marry her because she was wealthy. He wouldn’t mind cutting ties with the Nnaji’s family. But he didn’t want it to get to that point. He had known Jessica since she was a child and so would still want the relationship between the two families to remain. But he wished Jessica wouldn’t force his hands to cut off the ties. He was a man that was capable to make anyone disappear.

The moment I met you (Chapter 40)

By Nightengale Ben-Onyeukwu

‘I won’t go,’ Michael refused.

‘Why?’ Patricia raised an eyebrow. ‘If you want, you and Jessica could go alone and pick him up.’ She thought Michael wanted to have the time alone with Jessica while going to pick Edward from the airport since he was always busy with work and never had time to go on dates with Jessica. But she was wrong.

‘Mum, you and Jessica could go and pick dad up. I don’t want to ride in the same car with Jessica so that she wouldn’t have her hopes high.’

‘Jessica will feel bad with your decision. Don’t you think that you’re being harsh?’

‘I don’t care about what she feels. I don’t want to keep her hanging. She has the chance to have as many men as she wants… I’m not a part of that chance. She’s not the one for me.’

‘Then who’s the one for you?’ Patricia demanded.

Michael was silent for a moment. He couldn’t bring himself to tell his mother that he was already in love with Chioma Chima whom he just met yesterday by chance. He wasn’t ready to tell his mother about the girl. He was afraid of too many questions that his mother would ask. He doesn’t know anything about the girl. He only bumped into her at Jimmy Carter Street. And today he brushed her by accident with his car. There will be questions which he wouldn’t be able to answer. But there was one thing he was certain of and that was, he fell in love with Chioma Chima the moment he met her. She was his better half. His heart’s better half. Whether she was poor or rich, he was certain that she was the one for him.

He looked at his wristwatch. ‘It’s already late. Get some sleep.’

‘You look cute when you’re serious,’ she smiled at Michael.

‘Mum, go on ahead and sleep.’ Michael didn’t want to continue with the topic and turned to leave.

‘If you don’t leave peacefully, I’ll toss you out,’ Michael said in the tone that brooked no objection. Tossing the words at her, Michael walked out of the room.

Jessica rolled her eyes at Michael’s back. ‘ Do you damn think I will let you go that easily, you might win today, but I will stick to you until you’ll have no choice than to marry me.’

Michael went to his mother’s room when he found out that she was no longer in the living room. With a solemn face, he pushed Patricia’s bedroom door open and entered. He didn’t like the idea of his parents pairing him and Jessica. Jessica might have been his childhood friend but that doesn’t mean he would have to marry her. Feelings can’t be forced. He barged into the room with fury. But he paused when he saw that she was on the phone. She seemed to be speaking to Edward, her husband.

With her long glossy dark hair draping on her pillow, Patricia looked young and beautiful. She was leaning on the headboard of the king-size bed she shared with her husband and having a video-chat on her mobile phone. Her phone was Ceramic black Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus Smartphone.

Michael waited patiently until she ended the video call. Patricia glanced at Michael and smiled when she hung up.

‘Son, your father wants the three of us to pick him up from the airport tomorrow evening. Isn’t that great?

‘Three of us?’ Michael knew what she meant, and was furious with such decision.

Patricia nodded with a sweet smile. ‘Your father wants his arrival to be low- key. He is trying to avoid paparazzi and their busy body. Jessica is already a part of our family so I asked her to come over as she will be following us to the airport.’

Michael scoffed and said, ‘you have never been my woman. You’re just my childhood friend, even though is very clear that I gave you a few years gap and it was also clear that i never wanted you around me.’

‘Don’t speak nonsense.’ She turned back to look at Michael. ‘Being your childhood friend makes me your childhood sweetheart.’

Michael laughed mockingly, and then he walked over to the wine rack in his room and filled a glass of wine. ‘Young girl, don’t act like a crazy fool. I’m never your man and will never be.’ He lifted the glass to his thin lips and took a sip. ‘Stop making your life appear like you are in Asian drama series or maybe soap opera. You don’t even qualify to be a lead female character of a movie. It doesn’t suit you.’ He curved his lips coldly. ‘You can only qualify to act dead.’

‘I don’t understand the nonsense you said, I just love you, so I will stick to you and we will get married sooner or later. You can’t change destiny.’ Jessica stroked down a few strands of hair that was out of place, this was a simple movement yet was alluring and enchanting. But Michael seemed not to notice the existence of her beauty. Even with the white silk sleep dress that obviously made her look sexy, Michael wasn’t at all interested in her. ‘For you, I will be willing to play dead,’ she muttered.

‘I want you to go home,’ Michael said, not looking at her.

‘Why would I do that?’

‘Because this isn’t your home, got that?’ Michael tilted his head to look at Jessica.

Jessica charmingly rolled her eyes at Michael and said, ‘Aunt Patricia asked me to stay, you can’t make me leave.’

‘So?’

‘So, I’m going to sleep over. I have slept in this mansion before…’ she lowered her head and played with her manicured nails. ‘You can’t make me leave.’

The moment Michael entered his luxurious room, he saw Jessica lying on the sofa in his bedroom while an Indian drama was playing on the tablet she was holding. Her hair was tied up in a bun, thereby revealing her exquisitely dark glowing neck that could make a man stop in his track just to stare at her over and over again. She was very beautiful and was described as breathtaking by everyone that came across her. She possessed the kind of beauty that could give men a million dreams.

Jessica revealed a seductive smile when she noticed Michael’s presence in the room. ‘Michael, come and watch with me.’ She gestured for him to come.  ‘I’m sure you’ll like this romantic Indian movie.’ She rose to her feet. Smiling, she untied her bunned up hair, causing the soft and smooth dark hair to fall on her beautiful and tender face.

Michael glared at her. ‘Who let you inside my room?’

Jessica put her tablet down and walked over barefooted; she placed one of her hands over Michael’s shoulder and said with a sweet smile that got Michael furious, ‘Your mother let me inside’. She had a really nice-sounding voice that could melt any man’s heart. ‘Aunt Patricia said that I will be going to the airport with you tomorrow evening to pick your father from the airport.’

‘You don’t have to worry. I will get someone from the company to pick him up,’ replied Michael coldly.

‘Silly… would you prefer someone else pick up your father?’ Jessica exclaimed. It was obvious that she wasn’t pleased with Michael’s reply.

‘What’s your business with my decision?’ Michael seemed to know her tricks. ‘You want paparazzi to take pictures of us?  So that we will be the most searched on social media?’

Jessica bit her lower lip and felt wronged. ‘Aren’t you my boyfriend? We are already the most searched on social media.’ She turned her face away. ‘Michael I’m not an outsider. I’m your woman. We’ve known ourselves since we were children.’
